Richmond Docklands’ KO cup campaign came to an abrupt end in the quarter finals against a strong Sheffield side.  Luis Bello’s team travelled with only eight players and without a regular opposite player.  Joaquin Bello stepped up to the challenge opposite his brother Javier and did a great job but a high error count cost Docklands against a clinical Sheffield team.

Sheffield prove too strong for battling Richmond Docklands

Posted on December 17, 2017, Categories: Events, Leagues, News, NVL Men

Richmond Docklands ended 2017 with a hard fought 3-1 loss against last year’s Super8s runners-up Sheffield. Playing at their training venue Christs School, Richmond Docklands were hoping for an early Christmas present but despite playing some of their best volleyball of the last couple of months, they ended the year empty handed.

Captain Andrew Pink summed up his feelings afterwards, “I’m naturally disappointed with the loss but ultimately we can honestly say that we played a hell of a lot better than we did in our last two matches. If we’d played this well against Malory and Essex we’d have won at least one of those games. It’s frustrating but I think we can go into the Christmas break in a more confident mood and look forward to more victories early in the New Year”.

Richmond Docklands succumb to second successive league defeat

After a thoroughly dispiriting home performance against long-time rivals London Malory, Docklands had a full three weeks to stew until their next on-court appearance against fellow newcomers to Super 8s action Essex Blaze.

Team Essex came into the game winless in five competitive outings, but Richmond Docklands were well aware of the young side’s ability augmented by their rigorous coaching and training regime.

The question for Essex seemed to be when, not if, they would get their first victory of the season and a ring-rusty Richmond Docklands walked straight into a punch that left the side nursing their second successive league defeat.

Richmond Docklands remains unbeaten after win against London Lynx on Saturday

With just eight teams in England’s top flight, the fixture list is always going to play havoc for coaches and players alike when trying to sustain momentum throughout a long season with relatively few games.

On Saturday morning when Richmond Docklands set foot on the University of East London’s court to take on London Lynx in Super8s action, it had been a full three weeks since the team’s last competitive fixture.
