Playing Time Policy

This policy applies to Richmond Volleyball Boys Division

At Richmond Volleyball, we aim to create a positive and respectful environment where every player can develop their skills and enjoy the game. This Playing Time Policy has been developed to ensure clear communication and understanding about how playing time is determined, and to provide a constructive process for addressing any concerns. Our goal is to ensure that players, parents, and coaches work together to support both individual growth and team success.

Playing Time

Playing time is an important aspect of team sports and can sometimes be a sensitive topic. While recreational programmes often promote equal playing time, Richmond Volleyball follows an “earned playing time” approach in competitions. This means that playing time is based on a range of factors, including individual effort, skill, and team needs. However, all players will have equal opportunities to learn and develop during training sessions, and they may also receive playing time during scrimmages, at the coach’s discretion.

For official tournaments, the following factors will be considered when determining playing time:

1. Ability to execute during competition

2. Ability to perform specific skills needed or play specific positions during competition

3. Performance in practice (including skills, attitude and dedication)

4. Attendance/level of commitment to the team

5. Overall contribution, in whatever capacity, to the success of the team

Athletic abilities may influence a player’s position, but it is their performance in practice and matches that determines how and when they are utilised in tournaments. Coaches will also consider how individual players contribute to or detract from the overall team dynamic.

During tournaments, coaches continually evaluate and adjust line-ups to give the team the best chance of success. While not all players will receive equal court time, everyone is expected to embrace their role as defined by the coach and prioritise the team’s collective performance over individual expectations.

Respectful Communication

We understand that questions about playing time may arise. To maintain a positive atmosphere, we ask that:

  • Parents and players do not approach coaches during tournaments to discuss playing time.
  • Players and parents wait 48 hours after a tournament before initiating any discussions about playing time.
  • Concerns should first be addressed by the player directly with the coach, ideally before or after a practice session.

If further discussion is needed, the communication process is as follows:

  1. Player and coach.
  2. Player, parent, and coach (if unresolved).
  3. Player, parent, coach, and Division Manager (if still unresolved).

Our aim is to foster open and respectful dialogue. Coaches will listen, provide feedback, and work to understand the player’s perspective. Similarly, players and parents are encouraged to bring specific examples (e.g. date and match details) to facilitate a productive conversation. Together, we can work towards a mutual understanding and resolution.

Final Thoughts

Our Playing Time Policy is designed to ensure fairness, clarity, and mutual respect within the Richmond Volleyball Boys Division. By understanding and embracing these guidelines, we can work together to create a supportive environment that allows every player to thrive and contribute to the team’s success.

Thank you for being part of our community and for your commitment to Richmond Volleyball.
