Richmond the comic book heroes as Marvels and supporting cast fall by the wayside

The Richmond men’s division enjoyed a bumper weekend of victories.  Richmond Docklands progressed to the quarter finals of the National KO Cup with a professional performance against Manchester Marvels 1 whilst victories for our NVL2 and London Premier teams made it a 4-0 weekend.

The side from Manchester struggled to make the official start time due to accidents on the way south and when they did reach Kingston Arena they only had six players.  However, they provided some stern resistance and did not go down without a fight.

The disrupted warm-up and delay to the match seemed to benefit the visitors more as Richmond failed to find their rhythm.  Docklands were further distracted by three rotation errors being called against them in the first five points.  These lead to them being 8-2 down at the first technical time-out.  The home side regained their composure and probing service runs by James Scott and Javier Bello saw them ahead 16-13 by the second enforced stoppage.  Richmond Docklands went onto win 25-21 despite not really getting out of third gear.

Sets two and three followed similar patterns with Marvels taking an early lead only for Richmond Docklands’ superiority to come to the fore towards the middle of the set.  Richmond secured both sets to 19 and 20 to seal their place in the quarter final.  They will face Wessex at the end of January for a place in the last four.

Richmond Docklands return to Super League action next weekend when they welcome top of the table Team Essex Blaze to Kingston Arena.  Luis Bello’s men will face a much sterner test than this weekend but after their morale boosting victory over Sheffield the Richmond Docklands boys will up for the fight.

Meanwhile, the NVL2 side traveled to Bristol on Sunday and returned with a resounding 3-0 win over Team Bristol.  That makes it four wins out of four for our young side after just being promoted last season.

Our London Premier Division team also have that winning feeling this weekend.  They kicked off the sequence on Friday with a battling 3-1 win over Inter.  After losing the first set they recovered to take the victory in Bethnal Green.  They then managed to follow that up with a solid 3-0 win over ULU at Kingston Arena on Sunday.

Congrats to all involved and thanks once again to all the coaches, volunteers and parents for making this all possible.
