Spirited Richmond Go Down Fighting in Docklands
23th January 2012
Promotion chasing London Docklands (3rd) won 3-0 leaving Richmond (7th) still searching for three more league wins to secure their National League Division 1 status for next season.
Richmond started the 1st and 2nd sets badly giving away large runs of points. In the 1st set (0-12 down and 14-20 to 14-24) and in 2nd set (8-7 to 8-13 and 13-17 to 14-23). Docklands pressed Richmond very well with their serve and block and it was difficult for Richmond to make the difference. In the 3rd set Richmond can back and was much more composed in their play. They had the advantage throughout by a couple of points until both teams leveled (23-23) and then Docklands managed to close the game (26-24) with some tidy defence and attack.
Coach D.Rijvers commented, “Docklands played a good match. We had set a high bar for this game and looked forward to another 5 set thriller as at the previous meet between these two teams at the beginning of the season. Had we played the whole match as we played the 3rd set it may have been a 5 set match. We had the opportunity to come back but at the crucial moment we lost our composure in attack and block.
Richmond travel away again next Saturday to Stoke-on-Trent against Newcastle Staffs who are top of the league.
