Richmond crash in Leeds
16th January 2012
Richmond men made the long journey up North to Leeds to try and find their first win in 2012 but without success. They struggled against a strong and well drilled Boathouse team losing 0-3. This leaves Richmond 7th in the National League with the pressure to win 3 games from their next eight to avoid relegation.
In the first set Richmond were desperate to blast Boathouse’s block but this was always going to be difficult with three players bigger and stronger on the opposing side. Having learnt from the 1st set Richmond could have snatched the 2nd set leading 15-12 and then 18-16 but a cluster of errors and strong defence from boathouse gave the home side the edge and they closed the set 25-21. In the 3rd set Richmond played with purpose and quality, and controlled the set up to 15-13 but squandered superb chances to secure the set, eventually losing 18-25. Richmond were disappointed to have not gained a set in the game, as at the previous meet between these two teams Richmond had lost 2-3.
Coach Rijvers commented: “We lost because we played against a good team. We need to be smarter against bigger and taller blockers, and our attackers need to be more aggressive particularly the middle. We came into the game with a lot of positive energy and used all the players on the beach to full affect. Our libero David Morgan was our best player and kept us in the game with his consistent passing – but to be competitive we needed the whole team to work more together”.
Richmond travel away next Saturday to East London against London Docklands who are 3rd in the league.
