2011/12 South London Volleyball League half season review!
19th Dec 2011This is the 4th season of the South London Volleyball League played on Monday evenings from 7-10pm at a central venue (Richmond College, Twickenham). The league offers two mixed divisions and in a move to increase further high quality volleyball the league launched this season a new Premier Division for Men and Women. We have again filled the mixed league with 14 teams and the new premier league is limited to only three men’s and three women’s teams. With all teams playing roughly half of their regular season fixtures - How are the league contenders shaping up so far? In the Women's Premier Division Ealing Energy (won 4 & lost 0) are heading the table not losing a game. The battle is for 2nd place between Wimbledom & Richmond who are on equal points (won 1 & lost 3). In the Men's Premier Division Richmond (won 2 & lost 1) are heading the table followed closely by International (won 2 & lost 0) and Teddington (won 0 & lost 3). In the Mixed Division 1 there are three teams battling out for the league title with Twickenham Titanics (won 6 & lost 2) as the new league leaders followed closely by Brentford Drifters (won 5 & lost 3) and Pin-Lon Spikers (won 5 & lost 1). In 4th it’s Richmond Antlers (won 4 & lost 4), 5th Whitton Warriors (won 3 & lost 5) and lasts years champions, 6th Hampstead Spikers (won 2 & lost 6) and 7th Teddington Tide End (won 2 & lost 6). In the Mixed Division 2 Kingston Red Lions (won 6 & lost 0) are heading the table not losing a game. The battle is for 2nd place between four other teams Richmond College, Twickenham Icebergs, Raynes Park Rangers and Kingston Knights who are all on equal points (4 wins and 4 losses). In 6th place its Hampton Hawks (won 2 & lost 6) and 7th Hounslow Hot Shots (won 2 & lost 6). In the mixed divisions all the teams will play each other twice to determine the league champions. Then the bottom three teams in Division 1 will be relegated to Division 2 and the top three teams in Division 2 will be promoted to Division 1 and will then complete in the South London Volleyball Championship Play-off Finals (February/March). The top three teams will then progress to Championship Finals (April). In the Premier League Divisions teams will have four meetings to establish the champions. The league has approximately 180 players and is administrated by Richmond Volleyball. It’s open to high level (SL and/or LL Div 1) and beginner teams offering fantastic value and a great social atmosphere. In both the mixed and premier divisions’ teams will play 2 matches of two games per night. In the mixed division teams will self referee and must provide minimum of 3 persons to referee.
