GB Women come to Richmond in bike-ride fund raiser
30th July 2010
Great Britain's women's volleyball team final stop off was in Richmond on their bicycles to show off their skills and raise £250,000 to keep their 2012 Olympic dream alive.
Having completed the 300-mile bike ride from Sheffield to London they were
challenged by Richmond Volleyball members, Stan the Stag (club mascot) and
several members in Richmond Green shortly after 1pm.
Among them was Head GB Coach Audrey Cooper from Richmond and commented “The cycle ride was our own idea to raise the extra funds they need to support the ambitions as a squad, but also to raise the profile of a sport to which we’re extraordinarily dedicated. Every woman, all 18, on the squad has surrendered financial, geographical and occupational normality to relocate to their training base in Sheffield and train often six hours a day.
David Rijvers, Richmond Volleyball Chairman applaud the players' efforts, passion and commitment to raise more money and wish them all the success in these difficult financial times.
Volleyball is an amateur sport in the UK but a major professional sport in other European countries and as a club (London Sports Club of the Year 2010) we are working hard to develop the profile and recognition it serves to be a major sport in London with over 4,000 people being involved during 2009/10 season.
Andy Sutch, Chairman of Sport Richmond also sent a message of support, "I wish the GB Women’s Volleyball every success with their efforts, and sincerely hope that the Cycle 250 brings the rewards it deserves. The team spirit is there for all to see and I look forward to seeing you on the Olympic stage in 2012.”
