Fulham win Silver and Bronze at 1st PL4Sport National Junior Championships
3rd July 2010
Fulham FC Volleyball teams coached by Richmond Volleyball surpassed all expectations and won the silver and bronze medals at the 1st U14 Boys Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) National Junior 4-a-side Volleyball Championships held in Birmingham last Friday.
On the day 16 premier league boys teams can together and were grouped into four pools to compete for the right to be crowned champion of their age group. Fulham B was grouped with Stoke City (won 25-16), Aston Villa A (won 27-25) and West Ham (won 25-21) and Fulham A were set against; Aston Villa B (won 25-8), Wigan B (won 25-18) and West Bromwich Albion (won 25-17).
With both Fulham teams coming top of their qualification groups and progressing
to the quarter finals, the two teams would face each other in the semi-finals if
they were both to win their quarter final matches. Fulham B overpowered Wigan A
(won 25-21, 25-17) and Fulham A showed greater consistency and proved too much
for a far bigger and stronger Arsenal team (25-10; 25-11).
In a thrilling semi-final match Fulham B started very brightly and overcome a nervous Fulham A in the first set (25-17). In the second set Fulham A regained their confidence and challenged Fulham B point for point and although Fulham A won the set (25-21) they did not have enough energy in the tank to keep Fulham B below 17 points and lost the match on points difference.
The final was a highly competitive game with Blackburn Rovers showing the greater consistency and superior height and proved too much for Fulham B and were worthy champions winning the match 25-19; 25-23.Fulham A can on top in the 3rd and 4th play-off beating Tottenham Hotspur.
Medals were presented to the winners and runners up for both the boys and girls competition by Siobhan Atkinson (Premier League Community Development Executive) and Lisa Wainwright (Volleyball England’s Chief Executive Officer).
David Rijvers, Richmond Volleyball Schools Coordinator said, What a brilliant day, tiring, but so worthwhile to see the young players do so well in the 1st national PL4S u14 competition and the event was well organised by Volleyball England. Our relationship through the Fulham FC Foundation has given the young people in South West London access to volleyball and develop in an academy setting which has been a great success. We’ve established four volleyball satellite centres for varies age groups held at Tiffin Boys School (Sat 10am), Chessington CC (Mon 4.15pm), Coombe Girls (Thurs 4.30pm) and London Oratory (Fri 4.30 pm).
