Wimbledon Wildfire secures South London League title
30th April 20100
Wimbledon’s Wildfire overpowers Whitton Warriors in the South London Volleyball League Division 1 Finals held at Tiffin Boys School last Thursday. The finals consisted of the top six teams seeded from two local volleyball centres (Richmond and Kingston).
In group A Wimbledom Wildfire (Kingston Champions) can on top winning against PVC Power (2-0) and Teddington Tide End (2-0). In Group B Whitton Warriors (Richmond Champions) also won both of their matches 2-0 against Teddington Thunder and Hampstead Spikers. The final was a David vs. Goliath clash with Wimbledon powering their way (2-0) to their first Division 1 title.
David Rijvers, League Chairman and Chairman of Richmond Volleyball (CCPR UK Sports Club of the Year 2009 & London's Sports Club of the year 2010) said: Congratulations to Wimbledon’s strong performance setting the new standard for Division 1. I would also like to personally thank all the team coordinators who helped ensure the smooth running of the league. Since the launch of the SLVL in 2008 the league in 2009/10 drew in 280 mixed adult players and 60 junior players making this London’s most popular and fastest growing indoor volleyball competition. I’m looking forward to next season with much excitement seeing all the SLVL teams return and making this a stronger, bigger and better local community event for all to enjoy.
Team entries for 2010/11 are now being signed-up for two local centres: Richmond and Kingston and maybe another new centre in Hounslow. The league also runs sitting volleyball festivals and junior tournaments throughout the season.
