Richmond fail to convert a 5 set thriller
22nd March 2010
Richmond Volleyball NVL men failed to break their poor away form spell by losing 3-2 to relegated Loughborough. They fought hard in a 5 set National League Division Two thriller but failed to penetrate the well formed Loughborough defense. The loss means Richmond are still 5th in the league and need 1 more win from their next two games to gain promotion to Division 1.
After a promising opening first set, which Richmond won convincingly (11-25) Loughborough turned on the afterburners in the 2nd set to make sure this was not going to an easy ride for Richmond. At the end of the 4th set the game was level with 2 sets each but Richmond started the 5th poorly going down 5-2 and then 8-5 at the change over. Richmond offense failed to convert key points and block out Loughborough attacks which meant they closed the set at 15-11, winning the game.
Richmond have two games remaining. They first is at home against SGTV Solent who are 7th in the league (Sat 27th March); and then away to local neighbours London Knights (Sat 10th April) who are 3rd in the league. Richmond Men’s coach commented “It’s going to be tough run in so we need to start playing with some real fight and spirit if we want to gain promotion”
