16th March 2010
It's fast, It's exciting, It’s healthy, It puts the spring back into summer! It's the sunniest and coolest sport around. Beach Volleyball an Olympic phenomenon played in Australia, USA, South America, Asia and Continental Europe – even in countries without traditional beaches like Switzerland is coming to South London this coming Summer 2010.
The Ham Beach Arena will have three sand volleyball courts and will be open from early May through to early September 2010 running a number of mixed and single gender leagues such as 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 throughout the week from 6.30 to 9.00pm for elite volleyball players, amateur players and those who are playing just for fun. Courts will also be available from 5.30pm to 6.30 pm for organised club / team sessions and taster sessions.
Richmond Volleyball Club Chairman commented, following on from our success in 2009 with nearly 4,000 people playing volleyball with Richmond Volleyball this new beach sport facility will prove to be very popular and will be a great addition to the local community providing an exciting, and exhilarating opportunity to socialize and play a beach sport that they would not
normally have convenient access too such facilities in London.
The beach arena will aim to inspire and raise the profile of beach volleyball in London and in advance of the London 2012 Olympics. Beach Volleyball has enjoyed impressive growth throughout the world in recent years and under the auspices of the FIVB (Federation Internationale de Volleyball) the sport has become the most popular world summer sport. It was the second most viewed sport at the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and Beijing 2008 and is set to be a potential star at London 2012.
