Great team spirit but not enough in the tank to secure 5th set
24th Feb 2010
THE absence of three middle players A.De Souza, S.Monperrus and L.Tomášek was felt as Richmond Volleyball men suffered a tight 3-2 defeat in Sheffield however remain 5th in the (NVL) National Volleyball League table, and two above the qualifying place to Division 1.
They went down in the 1st set 25-15, but them in the 2nd and 3rd sets Richmond fought hard in defence and attack and were rewarded with two set wins. With bench players to support the middle and outside players Richmond in particularly the middle players (u18 E.Bardi and A.Kornilov) performed outstandingly but the team’s was unable to maintain their concentration in the 4th. Richmond early lead in the 5th set showed that they had the capability of winning the match but their fitness and energy levels fell and was not enough to hold on.
Coach Rijvers commented: despite losing last weekend, our recent performance and team spirit was very positive and has given the guys a boost as we head towards the last 3 games of the season. Richmond will travel to Loughborough in 3 weeks time (Sat 20th March), followed by a home match against SGTV (Sat 27th March); and then away to local neighbours London Knights (Sat 10th April). “If we play as well as we have done recently with a full and fit squad there’s no reason why we won’t be able to beat them and finish the season in the top 5 and qualify to NVL Division 1 for next season. "As long as we stayed focused and play consistently well, we do well.”
