Richmond out gunned by rampant Wessex
17th Jan 2010
Before the match both teams were joint 3rd in the Men’s National League Division
Two unfortunately the Richmond tasted a 3-0 defeat as they were comprehensively
outplayed by an outstanding Wessex side from Dorset. Wessex at home were
expected to provide a tough test for the Richmond having suffered a 3-1 defeat
by Richmond at the start of the season - and so it proved dominated in all areas, defending and blocking. Wessex leap-frog Richmond into 2nd place and fortunately Richmond manage to hold on to fourth spot with London Lynx dropping points to Solent.
Richmond coach commented "I am disappointed we didn't show enough quality defending and never passed the ball well enough to create 1 on 1 hitting opportunities over net (8 feet - 243cm). "We tried to put pressure on their pass with tough serves but too many errors disrupted our play. We met Wessex at home at the start of the season beating them so it was disappointing not to come away with a set." On a positive note, we managed to bring Eddie Bardi (6’4 – 193cm u19 youth player) through from the junior section and he played very well and gained valuable top national league experience.
With the new National League structure set to change for 2010/11 the current Division 2
will drop to ten teams (from 12) and renamed to Division 1. Our focus for the 2nd half of season is to consolidate our position in the top half of league and secure National League Division 1 for next season.
This will be a great achievement for the team, club and supporters having only played National League for two years gaining back-to-back promotions. We have five games left to play and need to win 3 - all to play for. Our next game is away
travelling to East London against London Lynx on Sunday 31st January.
