Christ and Waldegrave crowned Richmond schools borough Champions!
10th Dec 2009
Christ and Waldegrave were worthy champions at the 4th Richmond Schools borough volleyball championship finals. The top four boys and girls from secondary schools across the borough battled it out to take top spot at the u16 Competitive Edge Championships. The event held at Hampton Boys School saw 70 pupils in seven teams go head-to-head with Christ boys and Waldegrave girls winning the cup.
To qualify for the Championship Finals all the eight secondary schools (yr 10 & 11) received four weeks coaching from Richmond Volleyball coaches and competed in their earlier cluster group matches. The top two boys and girls teams from each cluster progressed to the ultimate borough showdown. In total over 180 pupils were involved in the 12 weeks winter volleyball programme.
The boys’ final was contested by HCC (1st) and Whitton (2nd) qualified from
Cluster A group and Christ (1st) and Grey Court (2nd) qualified from Cluster B group. The borough winner was decided by these four teams in a round-robin group playing each other once and the two top teams (Whitton and Christ) advancing to the finals. In the final Christ had too much hitting strength and overpowered Whitton very convincingly by 49 points to 22.
The girls’ final was contested by HCC (1st) and Waldegrave (2nd) qualified from Cluster A group and Christ (1st) and Teddington
(2nd) qualified from their Cluster B group. The borough winner was decided by these three teams in a round-robin group playing each other once and the two top teams (Whitton and Christ) advancing to the finals. In the finals Christ and Waldegrave were very evenly balanced with many long rallies showing excellent control of the ball. However Waldegrave managed to overcome Christ by 1 point winning by 35 points to 34.
Commenting on the success of the Richmond Schools Volleyball programme, Mike Skinner (Competitions Manager for Richmond and Kingston Schools Partnership) said, Volleyball has developed into one of the top 3 team sports in the borough. We are very pleased with Richmond Volleyball and their commitment and enthusiasm delivering a fun and competitive programme. All the competitions demonstrated how quickly the students have learned the game and how much fun they have had.
David Rijvers (Richmond Volleyball Schools coordinator) commented, “This is our 4th year running the year 10 and 11 programme and we were delighted with the high attendance at the coaching sessions and the standard of play. The high turn-out demonstrates there is much scope for volleyball to continue to develop in Richmond and Richmond Volleyball is committed building on its current success by being at the heart of developing this Olympic team sport.
Thanks to the schools volleyball programme Richmond's Junior section has over 60 boys and girls attending training regularly and competing in National Junior competitions from u18, u16, u15 and u14 age groups.
We would also like to express thanks to all the school teachers, venues and sports leaders who helped make the 12 weeks winter volleyball programme a great success.
