Ukrainian International leads Richmond to top of the NVL table
20th Oct 2009
Newly promoted Richmond men were not quite at their clinical best but still proved too strong on the road for a 3-1 win against SGTV Solent in Southampton who are struggling for their first National League (NVL) Division 2 win.
The 1st set was dominated by M.Ghelfi and Y. Zdorovcov serves scoring a total of 12 points. In the 2nd set Richmond’s passing unit failed to connect with the Russian setter A.Kornilov and gave the opposition cheap points from several hitting errors. Richmond were straight back on the attack in the 3rd set introducing G.Scatigna-Gianfagna (2.02cm opposite blocker/hitter) taking an early lead 9-5. The balance of team was much better and delighted David Rijvers, Richmond Coach. There was some strong blocking by middle players L.Tomášek and D.Cleather and team shrugged off 2nd set loss and took the 3rd. Confidence was a high in the 4th set and dominated the net with serve and block (18-11) but a run of 4 errors gave Solent some hope but were unable to convert themselves making several hitting errors in the closing stages.
Richmond coach commented: although we did not play well the important thing is that we were able to grind-out a result taking us to the top of the league for the 1st time having played an extra game. This will be a great boost for the team as we play home in front of our fans and cheerleaders next Saturday, 24th October (5pm) at Kingston Arena (400 seated stadium) against East London Lynx who are sitting 4th and have not yet lost a game. Should be a good game!
