Tough northern double header weekend for Richmond men
13th Oct 2009
Richmond Volleyball men go 3rd in the National League travelling away in a tough two game weekend suffering their first loss of season to Leeds (3-0) on Saturday and won a hard-earned match (3-1) in Manchester on Sunday.
Despite missing several key players league leaders Leeds VC was a big challenge for Richmond facing five international players from Hungary. Leeds had a great start serving very strong and attacked with a lot of aggression. Richmond struggled to work them out and lacked the killer instinct and sharpness in the passing unit and block to control the front court game.
The second game of the doubleheader weekend against Manchester VC proved promising as Richmond jumped out of starting blocks and played a very clinical 1st set against one of the tallest teams in the league. Unfortunately Richmond’s concentration in the 2nd broke down and allowed the 6’8 inch Manchester middle hitters opportunities to dominate the net. But outside hitter Michael Ghelfi and Yura Zdorovcov keep the team steady and Richmond had to come back from behind in the 3rd and 4th sets for a late charge to the finish the game. Richmond is on the road again next weekend to Southampton followed by a home match on Sat 24th October at Kingston Arena for 5.00pm start.
Coach D.Rijvers commented: It was a tough weekend playing in a sports centre where the ceiling height did not comply to NVL standards and big players missing. However the players were motivated on Sunday and did a great job to win.
