Powerful Richmond climb to 2nd spot
5th Oct 2009
International outside hitters P.Ceglowski (Poland) and Y. Zdorovcov (Ukraine) sent Richmond NVL men’s team second in the National Volleyball League Division 2 giving the home side a deserved 3-1 victory in front of their 100 fans and cheerleaders at Kingston Arena (Surrey/South London).
Taking advantage of their superior height, Richmond employed a variety of tactics to set up their outside hitters and won the first two sets comfortably 25-21 and 25-20. Having made a few changes, they lost the third 25-21 but returned to a full strength team to clinch the fourth 25-9 with some strong blocking.
Richmond are now one of three teams who have won both opening games, along with Leeds Carnegie and third place London Knights. The home side also added a touch of glamour to their first home match, with DJs and cheerleaders performing during time-outs and between sets.
Richmond coach commented: It was a great home win in front of our fans and with two league wins we are sitting 2nd in the league. We still have a long season ahead of us but our fans fully appreciated the additional on-court entertainment.
The aim is to make our NVL game night one of the best atmospheres in the league creating a fun, colourful and vibrant environment with exciting volleyball. Don’t miss out on our next home match with our stunning cheerleaders at Kingston Arena on Saturday 24th October. 1st serve is at 17.30.
