Juniors star in Richmond Cup win
8th September 2009
Richmond NVL men and London QKX women regained the Richmond Cup (a pre-season indoor national tournament) on Sunday evening held at the Kingston College Arena in South London.
The tournament featured seven top national and regional teams in the men’s and women’s competitions.
In the men’s group Richmond were challenged by NVL 1 Cambridge VC (won 2-1), NVL 3 Sussex Dolphins (lost 2-0) and Surrey’s Regional Champions Wimbledon VC (won 2-0). Richmond finished 2nd in the group and had the opportunity to make amends from the earlier loss against Sussex. Richmond composed themselves well in the final and won convincingly 2-0 (25-14; 25-23) in front of their lively home crowd. In the women’s competition Richmond faced Surrey’s regional champions Spelthorne VC (won 2-1) and London regional champions London QKX (lost 2-1). London QKQ defeated Spelthorne VC (3-0) giving the title back to London QKX which they won last year.
Richmond men’s coach commented: I thought it was an impressive display with a new-look team. Five senior player were missing and three new players (E.Bardie, R.Bachor both u18 and Y.Zdorovu – Ukraine International) were added and contributed well. The team showed some strong attacks and a good level of creativity on the net. All the players are now competing for places which will help develop the squad with new national league campaign starting in two weeks.
Richmond women’s coach commented – we have been developing our women’s elite team over the past 18 months and the progress made has been significant and we are now looking forward to start the season competing in both London’s and Surrey top leagues. They have also set their sights on entering the National League for Sept 2010.
