30th July 2009
In association with Play Sport London the 4th Richmond Summer Mixed Volleyball League Season can to a close last Tuesday evening after 9 weeks of strong volleyball competition with more than 100 people coming from all over South West London competing, and with the overall winner being announced.
In the final week there were only five players in competition for honours – Marek Sokolowski, Renata Zhunusova, Franck Glandy, Dan Cleather and Michael Ghelfi. A total of 50 people turned out to challenge the contenders hopefully to create an upset; but in the end, it was Michael Ghelfi who took home 1st prize and the new club tracksuit with 49 points as 2009 Richmond Summer League Volleyball Champion. Dan Cleather finished 2nd, and for the first time we had a female player Renata Zhunusova finishing 3rd. The best performing player was Therese Emborg and the Most Improved Beginner was Andy Gray. The league organizers would also like to recognize the tremendous dedication from league volunteers Marek Sokolowski and Neil Kenyon helping set up the volleyball courts every week.
Richmond’s Events Coordinator commented that the feedback from the 100 players was very positive having grown by over 40% on last year. The league was aimed at being open, flexible and friendly providing a fantastic opportunity for people of different ages, gender and sporting ability to participate in volleyball and play lots of matches. It has established itself as an important development link for the local community and has potential to be a major sporting feature in the Richmond summer sports calendar.
