Second helping for 4v4 Slam winners DCMM
20th July 2009
In association with Play Sport London, London’s only 4v4 Grand Slam Tournament that goes on tour was held last Sunday at Palewell Common (Richmond) with over 70 players registered.
It was the 2nd of four Grand Slam Tournaments to be held across South London this summer. It consists of 2 divisions; Mixed (9 teams) and Open (for the serious players, 7 teams).Team DCMM secured their hold at the top of the Open division winning their 2nd Grand Slam event by beating Spikeos in the final (2-0). In the Mixed Division Salta Chica claimed top place by winning the final against Vamos Chica Tanja (2-0).
Richmond Volleyball event organiser commented, It was great to see 17 teams compete in one of London’s top green flag parks. It was a fantastic atmosphere with great team spirit, strong competition, fair play and all round good fun. We would also like to thank Play Sport London and the Richmond council’s Open & Parks team for their commitment to support our tournament and this Olympic sport.
The 4v4 Grand Slam format is different to a traditional grass volleyball tournament as we only play 4v4 and we play a series of 4 events across South London not just one weekend. Teams accumulate points over the 4 events to win ranking points for prizes; in the open division they get the chance to compete to win an Ipod Shuffle and in the mixed division the chance to win championship t-shirts. It also offers great value - participants play a minimum 12 sets per event for £15. Anyone can enter a team- it is open to all ages, abilities and genders with free coaching on site on the day.
The 3rd round of the 4v4 Grand Slam will take place at Fairfield Recreation Ground (Kingston) on Sun 2nd August and the final tournament will be held on Sun 16th Aug at Old Deer Park (Richmond). New team registrations are welcome to challenge the top teams in either the Open or Mixed Divisions.Team entry is £15.00 per event. Registration is at 9.15am. 1st serve is at 10.00am.
