7th May 2009
On Tuesday 5th May 2009 Richmond Volleyball, a Clubmark 2 accredited club, was crowned “UK Sports Club of the Year 2009” (SCOTY) at the 16th CCPR (Central Council of Physical Recreation) award ceremony held at the Grange Hotel in London.
In front of a packed house of 180 distinguished sporting delegates, sponsors and key speakers, Richmond received the 1st prize from the Olympic Gold medallist Rebecca Romero, Tim Lamb (CCPR Chief Executive) and Jamie Stewart (Exact Software UK MD).
The night was also a triumph for volleyball, as this is the first time that a volleyball club has won the much coveted SCOTY. Volleyball England’s Chief Executive Lisa Wainwright and National Club Development Officer Stuart Johnson also attended the presentation and are delighted that volleyball has been honoured with such a high profile award after Richmond overtook 5 other finalists from more than 150,000 sports clubs across the UK.
Richmond Volleyball Club Chairman David Rijvers said: " It is a fantastic achievement for the club and for volleyball. The award is a testament to all club members, partners and supporters who share the vision and passion to develop sport by making it accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for all. Richmond Volleyball has made significant progress in the community over the past three years and we are very proud that our achievements have been recognized at the highest level. Having recently won the title “2009 London Sports Club of the Year’ from Pro-Active London, this is the icing on the cake.”
Richmond Volleyball Club Secretary Vera Kenyon commented: “We are delighted with the award and would like to thank CCPR for recognition of our efforts to involve a wider community into the sport and regular physical activity. All our plans became a reality as a result of tremendous dedication from the club volunteers. We would like to thank them all for being the heart and soul of Richmond Volleyball. It is their passion for volleyball and generous sharing of their time, knowledge and skills that has made Richmond Volleyball a true club for all”.
