East London take home South London Sitting Volleyball Cup
31st March 2009
Richmond Volleyball launched their first South London Sitting Volleyball Cup on Monday. The cup tournament marked the culmination of a series of sitting volleyball festivals that Richmond Volleyball had been running as part of their Winter of Sport programme.
Sitting volleyball is similar to the standing game. The rules and skills are the same but it is played on a smaller court with a low net and sitting down. Players move around the court on their bottoms, they are only allowed to use their hands to move themselves around the court and their bottoms must not leave the ground.
Held at Richmond College the Sitting Volleyball Cup was contested by Lincoln Sitting VC, East London Lynx VC (hosting several GB players) and Richmond VC. East London came on top winning both matches 2-1, with Richmond VC as runners-up winning 1 match and Lincoln taking bronze.
Richmond Volleyball Sitting Volleyball Coordinator commented ‘the cup was a great success. The matches were very competitive and closely fought and the teams were fully integrated with able and disabled players. Everyone enjoyed the evening and it raised awareness of the sport for those who had not played before. Richmond Volleyball would like to thank all players (especially Lincoln who traveled far to participate), spectators and club volunteers who supported the event and made it an enjoyable success’.
The South London Winter of Sport Sitting Volleyball Festivals generated much interest and their success has secured further funds for next year. The funds will be used to support the launch of the 1st South London Sitting Volleyball League in 2009/10. To sign up your team contact us now for an application form.
