Christ's superstars shine in U14 Richmond Borough Finals
27th March 2009
Hampton Boys School hosted the 3rd Competitive Edge U14 Richmond Schools Volleyball Championship Finals for girls and boys.
Over 100 young students come together at the tournament to compete for their school to become borough champions. In preparation for the tournament Richmond Volleyball delivered 4 four coaching sessions and organised two cluster competitions for all schools over 10 weeks. Results of the cluster competitions were used to seed the schools for the borough Championship finals.
On the day eight boys teams competed at the finals. They were split into 2 pools (pool 1: Christ A, Hampton Boys A ; Teddington and Orleans Park, and in pool 2; (HCC; Christ B , Hampton Boys B and Shene). The top 2 from each went into the winner pool to compete for the champions cup.
The top four boys teams from the pool groups that preceded to the winners group were: HCC, Teddington, Christ A and Christ B, with Christ A flagged as the favorites. It was a highly competitive group and Christ A proved worthy champions dominating all their final matches. Teddington fought hard throughout and finished 2nd, followed by Christ B and HCC.
Hampton A, Hampton B, Orleans Park and Shene qualified for the boys play-off finals. Shene came out on top after edging Hampton A out from the top spot.. Shene performed very well given that they were the youngest team in the competition all from year 7 (u12).
The girls’ competition featured: HCC, Teddington, Christ and Orleans Park.. Christ and Orleans Park started as favourites coming top in their earlier cluster finals, but it was Christ Girls who set the pace on the day winning all matches with maximum points, followed by Orleans Park (4 points), Teddington (1 point) and HCC (1 point).
The top four boys and girls teams will now progress to the ultimate ‘Inter-Borough Volleyball Finals’ in early April were they will meet the top four girls & boys teams from Kingston borough to see who will be crowned inter-borough champions.
Commenting on the success of the volleyball programme Richmond & Kingston Competitions Manager Mike Skinner said, ‘We are very pleased with Richmond Volleyball and their commitment and enthusiasm delivering a fun competitive programme. All the competitions demonstrated how quickly the students have learned the game and how much fun they have had’.
Richmond Volleyball Schools Coordinator commented, ‘We were delighted with the high attendance at the coaching sessions and the high standard of play with all teams playing 3 Touch which resulted in some great rallies. Thanks goes to all the school teachers, venue host and sport leaders who helped on the day as scorers and referees making the event a great success’.
