Richmond out played by Sheffield in National Shield Semi-Final
8th March 2009
Strong hitting by Richmond middle hitters was not enough to over power Sheffield a tall, young and athletic Division 1 team, who won the match 3-0. Richmond started well in the first set leading 7-3 and continued to exchange powerful attacks but Richmond lost concentration at 16-16 giving the advantage and opening set to Sheffield (25-20).
In the 2nd set Richmond started well again taking the advantage at 12-9 but again loss of concentration gave Sheffield the momentum to move to another level (18-15) and close the set at 25-20. In the final set Richmond tried valiantly to get themselves back into the game but could get no closer than 3 points as Sheffield took the early lead and finished the game at 25-19.
Richmond coach commented ‘the result and performance was disappointing for the team, however we will take the positives and learn from this experience. This is the first time Richmond has meet a national league division 1 team. The team is aspiring to this level and in 18 months has progressed very quickly. We will continue supporting and developing the squad and must now focus on our next four league fixtures which we need to win to secure automatic promotion to National League Division 2 for next season.‘
