Richmond NVL men progress to national shield semi-final for 1st time in club history
16th February 2009
Richmond national league men's team booked their National Shield semi-final spot for the first time in the club history after overpowering local rivals White Eagles 3-0. They will now rub shoulders with Sheffield a top national league division 1 team at the Sheffield National Volleyball Development Centre in March.
Richmond had a full strength squad to select from and they did not disappoint the home crowd. The players produced a strong block and defence game in the 1st set 25-18. In the 2nd set Richmond had to come from behind 12-15 and with decisive attacks from front and back court took advantage 16-15. The opposition was reluctant to give in and took the initiative at 22-23 but with strong middle blocking Richmond stole the set 27-25. In the 3rd set Richmond continued their strong jump serving and wrapped up the quarter final with a convincing 25-17 in what was a clinical team performance.
Richmond coach commented, the performance was very positive and we’re starting to look more like a team. We’re relishing the challenge as underdogs in the Semi-Finals against a strong Sheffield side.
