Richmond sink Boathouse VC in a 5 set roller coaster National Shield match
12th January 2009
Dan Cleather strong blocking gave Richmond Men NVL team a 3-2 victory in South Yorkshire against a determined Boathouse team and secured their place in the quarter final of the Volleyball England National Shield.
In the 1st set the hosts were awakened by Richmond 25-11 all guns blazing and in 2nd and 3rd sets boathouse proved harder to break down compounded by several unforced errors by Richmond’s passing unit. The frustration showed and with a few changes in the fourth set Richmond showed their dominance on the net and in defence and was rewarded with the 4th set. In the 5th Richmond started well serving 5 points on the run and maintained control closing out the roller coasting match and victory.
Richmond coached commented – Our 1st competitive match for 3 weeks and we made hard work of this game. The 1st set was very clinical but our inability to maintain discipline and quality on movement and technique in the 2nd and 3rd sets was evident. The team is learning fast and from this experience the players will understand that when you’re in control you don’t give the opposition the chance to get back in the game by losing concentration.
