u16 Hampton Boys and Waldegrave Girls crowned Richmond champions!

Congratulations to Hampton Boys and Waldegrave Girls who were worthy champions at the borough volleyball championship finals. 12 teams (110 youngsters) from across Richmond borough battled it out to take the top boys and girls slot at the u16’s Richmond Secondary Schools Volleyball Championships (yr 10 and 11) . The event was held at Hampton Boys were many lively spectators observed the largest borough volleyball finals to take place.
In the boys’ event Hampton Community College (HCC) and Christ School started favourites coming top in their early cluster festivals. The day’s play started with all the teams playing each once over one set. Hampton Boys qualified to the semi-final winning 5 of their group matches against HCC A, Christ, HCC B, Orleans Park, Grey Court, but lost to Whitton. There other 3 semi-finalist were HCC A (2nd won 4 matches), HCC B (3rd won 3) and Christ School (4th won 3). In the first semi-final HCC A played against HCC B with HCC A winning the game. The other semi-final was between Christ and Hampton Boys and Hampton Boys just went through winning by 1 point. The final was between HCC A and Hampton Boys with Hampton Boys coming through as borough champions.
In the girls’ event Waldegrave Girls and Grey Court girls started favourites coming top in their early cluster festivals. On the day they also played all the teams once over one set. Waldegrave A qualified to the semi-final winning 3 of their group matches against Christ, Orleans Park and Waldegrave B but lost to Grey Court. The other 3 semi-finalists were Grey Court (1st in the group with 3 wins), Waldegrave A (3rd with 3 wins) and Christ (4th with 1 win). In the first semi-final Grey Court played Waldegrave B with Grey Court coming on top. The other semi-final was between Christ and Waldegrave A and Waldegrave A went through to the final. The final was between Waldegrave A and Grey Court with Waldegrave coming out on top as borough champions.
In the boys group Hampton Boys, Hampton Community College and Christ School and in the girls group Waldegrave Girls and Grey Court girls will now progress to 1st Inter-Borough Volleyball Championships on Tuesday 9th Dec held at Hampton Boys School were they will meet the top two boys’ & girls teams from Kingston Schools and test their skills again.
Commenting on the success of the Volleyball programme, Richmond PDM said, Volleyball has developed into one of the top 5 team sports in the borough. We are very pleased with Richmond Volleyball and their commitment and enthusiasm delivering a fun competitive programme, all the competitions demonstrated how quickly the students have learned the game and how much fun they have had.
Richmond Volleyball Schools coordinator commented, “This is our 4th year running the yr 10 and 11 programme and we were delighted with the high attendance at the coaching sessions and the standard of play. The Richmond Schools volleyball programme has steadily grown from 4 to 12 teams. The high turn-out demonstrates there is much scope for volleyball to continue to develop in Richmond and Richmond Volleyball is committed building on its current success by being at the heart of developing this Olympic team sport.
We would also like to express thanks to all the school teachers, venues and sports leaders who helped make the 12 weeks winter volleyball programme a great success. We hope many of the competitors will go on to represent Richmond Junior teams at the National Junior u15 and u16 Championships.
