Richmond's Germans out played in the Semi-Finals
16th November 2008
The Richmond based German School of London achieved 4th place and were out-classed by a strong scottish school in the Semi-Finals at the ISSA u18 Boys Volleyball Tournament last weekend.
The team coached by Richmond Volleyball was competing against eight international schools from London, Scotland, Turkey, Spain and Portugal held at the St Dominic’s School in Lisbon.
In the German School group featured last year’s champions International School of Aberdeen (lost 2-0), Southbank International School (won 2-1), and American School of Madrid (lost 2-0). From these results the German School finished 3rd in their group and under the rules of the competition their next opponents was American School of Egham who had finished 2nd in the other group. The match started nervously for both sides and ACS Egham took the early lead in both sets, however thanks to strong blocking in the final stages of the matched the German School confirmed their semi-final place.
The German School faced again the heavily favourites International School of Aberdeen and although made a promising start in both sets it was too much with ISA dominated attack and block and bowed out 2-0. The hosts St Dominic’s of Lisbon who were the overall group 2 winners and then lost to American School of Madrid (2-0) in the other semi-final now waited the German School for 3rd and 4th play-off.
Unfortunately this was one game too many for the young players and St Dominic’s
can on top (2-0) driven by a young semi-professional player. The final was between International School of Aberdeen and American School of Madrid with Aberdeen coming out on top (3-0).
The German School coach praised his side’s battling display. They were a young team and were learning fast and had to concentrate very hard throughout the 3 day tournament. It was a good performance. All the players contributed well to the overall team performance and many are now looking forward to representing u18 Richmond team in the National Junior Volleyball Championships with the 1st round in December.
