Richmond NVL success continues
27th October 2008
Richmond national league men's team was on the road again last weekend and won both their NVL Division 3 Eastern Conference fixtures against Sussex Dolphins (3-0) and Newmarket (3-1). This was the first meeting between these two clubs and their double win moved Richmond to 4th place in the league.
Having watched Sussex's earlier win over Newmarket (3-0) in the 1st of 3 fixtures of the day, Richmond was prepared for a tough match against Sussex.
Richmond started well in the 1st set edging in front with powerful hitting and blocking but in the 2nd set Sussex proved harder to break down and both teams were level at 18:18. However Richmond's run of seven serves & blocks
secured the set. Richmond capitalised on their momentum in the 3th set and pulled away quickly through some excellent all round team play and closed the game at 19:25.
Final Result: Sussex Dolphins [0] v Richmond Volleyball [3]
Set Results: 16-25; 18-25; 19-25
Richmond's Player of the Match:: P.Ceglowski,
In the final match of the day Newmarket were in no mood to be walked over having lost to Sussex in their 1st match of the day. Richmond started well again and dominated the 1st and 2nd sets
attacking from all positions. Although Newmarket found it difficult to block Richmond's fast tempo attacks their resilience in defence was to be praised and
rewarded with a 3rd set win (26-24). Richmond’s impatience to go
through the rallies coupled with many usual hitting errors was a lesson to be learnt for Richmond's young players. In the 4th set Richmond made several changes and ran away winners but had to work very hard.
Richmond coached commented – It was good to get another two wins and move up the leader board. The team is playing well for each other and understand the importance of strong defence which will be needed to challenge against the top half teams.
