Richmond Men salvaged their pride and win their Crown

In its inaugural year Richmond Men and London QKX women were celebrating success on Sunday evening after winning the 2008 Richmond Volleyball Cup.
The friendly pre-season tournament attracted 30 spectators held over one day at Kingston Arena featuring eight national and regional teams. In the men’s group highlighted Newbury VC, Tendring VC,
Wimbledon VC and Richmond Volleyball; and in the women’s group Epsom VC, Wimbledon VC, Richmond Volleyball, and London QKX.
Each team in the men’s and women’s group competed against each other once over best of three sets. The top two teams from each group qualified for the final and teams finishing 3rd and 4th competed in the play-off.
In the women’s group London QKX and Epsom advanced to the finals with 6 points and Epsom with 4 points. In the men’s group there were three teams with equal points but it was Richmond and Newbury who advanced to the finals with
higher sets scores.
In the women’s final QKX maintained their dominate form winning convincingly 2-0 and for 3rd and 4th place Richmond can on top against Wimbledon 2-0. In the men’s final Richmond ran away as worthy winners (2-0) against Newbury having lost to them 2-1 in the qualifying rounds. In the men's 3rd and 4th place Tendring can on top (2-0) against Wimbledon.
Richmond Volleyball would like to express thanks to Kingston Arena for hosting the event and to all the teams making the 2008 Richmond Cup a successful tournament. Richmond coaches was pleased with the players performance giving all squad members a run out. In summary it was good volleyball, good preparation and good fun. The men's players are now competing for places which will help develop the squad with their new national league challenge.
