Richmond mixed team triumph at Guildford Tournament
19th August 2008
Richmond volleyballers were celebrating success on Sunday evening after winning the mixed division one at the 2008 Guildford 6x6 Grass Volleyball Tournament supported by Volleyball England
as one of nine national regional grass series tournaments.
The tournament was held over one day with over 20 participating teams representing local, regional and national volleyball clubs.
The Richmond team comprising of Chee Cubillos, Alejandra Avila, Jorge Arraya, Dan Cleather,
Martin Linger and Dave Nash beat 7 teams in total to win their division. The first round of qualifying games Richmond won convincingly against Rome Muppets and VDCD Coaches. Their next round of matches in the winners group proved much more difficult with five teams of high standard (East Pants, Guildford Grasshoppers, Reading, and
Spelthorne) all going for honours.
Richmond won in straight sets against East Pants and Guildford Grasshoppers but matches against Reading and
Spelthorne proved more challenging. Against Reading the team were a little “over confident” and went behind 3-11. Richmond managed to re-focus and reduced the gap to 13-16. As the tournament was based on points and time (25min per match), they won the 1st set by a margin, although losing 3 points to Reading on the 2nd, they came on top when the whistle blew. The match against
Spelthorne was a similar affair.
Throughout the tournament Richmond demonstrated solid volleyball skills and a united team front, with a notable performance from Dan with his strong blocking.
