12th May 2008
Richmond Men can within a whisker of success at the South East Volleyball Association (SEVA) Cup last weekend in Portsmouth as a wild card team. The team was competing against the County League Champions and Runners-up from Kent, Hampshire, Berkshire, Sussex and Surrey.
12 teams were divided into 2 pools of six with the top teams progressing to the final and 2nd placed teams competing for 3rd and 4th play-off. Richmond Men started brightly beating Spikeo’s (Berkshire) 2-0 and then by the same score against Mole Valley (Surrey), and Strood (Kent). They then drew 1-1 with the overall winners Worthing Vipers (Sussex) but lost by a total of 3 points difference. All the games were timed to 40 minutes which was a new experience for all the players.
After a nail beating wait Richmond finished 2nd in their pool and missed out on the final by 3 points. In their 3rd and 4th play-off match they faced Southampton University (Hampshire) and won 2-1 coming from behind in the 3rd set 10-8.
Richmond women qualified for the SEVA Cup by coming runners up in the Surrey Women’s Division 1 League; however they found it difficult on the day to find their recent form and lost their first two matches 2:0 against South Hants (Hampshire) and Portsmouth and drew the next two 1:1 (Worthing and Sets in the City) but lost these games on total match points difference.
Richmond Men's coach commented, although the players were disappointed not to reach the finals they all contributed well to the overall team performance and are now looking forward to next season's National Volleyball League challenge.
