Champions finish with a flourish
17th April 2008
Richmond Men’s 1st wrapped up the London League as champions and finishing the season on a high last Tuesday evening with a convincing 3-0 victory against Metropolitan Police.
Due to a late match start Richmond started very slowly giving the Met a 16-10 1st set lead driven by Donald Deans (ex England) and Steve Johnson (ex Richmond). Strong serving by T.Olivera and quick middle attacks by T.Stepien and E.Penglis settled Richmond and caused serious problems to Met’s block and defence enabling Richmond to claw back to 20-18 and steal the set.
In the 2nd and 3rd set Richmond maintained their flowing volleyball attacking through all front and back court positions frustrating the opposition with little reply. M.Sokolowski and J.Gentner performed well in the passing unit and T.Olivera showed his strong consistent power hitting on the wings.
This game was going to be tough game and we needed to play well against a very tall Met side said Richmond’s coach. It was a good win and finishing the season with a 100% win track record is a great achievement for a new and young team training 2 to 3 times per week. I would like to congratulate the whole team on a successful season and look forward to continuing to build on this year’s success for next season
