Richmond Volleyballers have a sitting good time!
31st March 2008
Richmond Volleyball hosted a sitting volleyball 4 all event on Sunday 30th March at Hampton Sports Centre. The event was sponsored by Pro-Active South London and Richmond Council to help promote Disability Inclusive Awareness Week with the aim to recruit more people to sitting volleyball.
The event involved a showcase of sitting volleyball matches between Withensea Wild, East London Lynx (both featuring GB players) sitting volleyball clubs and Richmond ‘Able 2’ All Stars team, and an opportunity for members of the public to ‘come and try’. All 32 participants, old and young enjoyed the high spirits of the afternoon and joined in with cheering and supporting the visiting teams as they competed in their matches. In the end East London Lynx triumphed winning all their matches 2-0, although Richmond Volleyball All Stars did manage to give them a run for their money.
Richmond Volleyball Club would like to extend their warm thanks to Withensea Wild VC, East London Lynx VC, Newbury VC, Richmond club volunteers and Hampton Sports Centre staff who supported the event and made it an enjoyable success.
Sitting Volleyball is a great integrative variation of standing volleyball, with able-bodied and disabled players being able to play side by side. It is a fast paced and exciting game to both play and watch, and is even considered to be more intense and quicker than its standing format.
