Richmond Men check out BA
17th February 2008
Richmond Men's 1st team took all the points in a five set epic against British Airways consolidating their position at the top in the London League. Richmond went ahead winning the 1st two sets 25-19 and 25-16. In the 3rd Richmond started slowly giving the opponents a 5-1 lead and although the home side clawed their way back 20-21 it was BA who capitalised on Richmond defence errors.
In the 4th Richmond introduced their 6-6’ opposite blocker G.Scatigna-Gianfagna and although it gave Richmond much needed blocking height BA continued to attack with purpose levelling the game 24-26. The positive momentum in the 4th continued in the 5th with Richmond taking an early lead 6-2 lead. Fitness was an obvious sign in this 5 set epic and it was BA who
ran out of fuel unable to stop E.Penglis and T.Oliveria who caused problems throughout the game with their powerful hits. Overall good passing by J.Gentner, blocking from C.Lopez, M. Sokolowski and defence by M.Ghelfi and E.Penglis gave a good team victory to Richmond.
Richmond coach commented, ‘It was an important game for us to win with BA positioned 2nd in the league. But we are now in top spot and we have a game in hand so we are in a good position’.
