Men power past Hillingdon
1st October 2007
Richmond 1st team started their London League campaign at home (Kingston Arena) with a convincing 3-0 win against league
favourites Hillingdon VC.
Richmond had been rebuilding over the summer and all seven new players were given their Richmond debut. The visitors started the game with a early lead of 4-12 due to Richmond unsettled nerves dominating the first half of the 1st set as Richmond struggled to get their game going. However the team settled down and started to play their game in the 2nd half of the 1st set producing some excellent quality volleyball.
Mirek Pinkowski and Giorgio Scatigna-Gianfagna lead the attack with strong power attacks supported by Evan Penglis and
Michael Ghelfi showing steady defensive play enabling Richmond the opportunity to claw back an eight point deficit and winning the first set 25-23.
The positive momentum towards the end of the 1st set created the scene for the next two sets were Richmond managed to take early leads and control the game with strong blocking from Carol Lopez and Giorgio Scatigna-Gianfagna supported by strong serving from David Rijvers and Michael Ghelfi. The opposition had very little to offer and Richmond continued to dominate the net and defensive game unsettling Hillingdon’s flow. The win was a good confidence booster for a rebuilt Richmond side showing much potential commented Richmond’s Coach.
