Back to Basics at Barnes Primary School
15th March 2007
Barnes Primary Schools was the first in the Borough to have Richmond Volleyball coaches (Vera Kenyon and Evan Penglis) delivering a new programme for 8-10 years olds.
During the course of one day around 100 children, some of them for the first time in their lives, had experienced this Olympic team game.
The interest was undoubtedly boosted by fantastic presentation for the whole school which involved the Head Teacher Mr Hartley and PE teacher James O’Donnell competing against the Richmond Volleyball duo. Support for the Barnes Primary side by an excited 350-strong home crowd was overwhelming!
Pupils from Years 4 and 5 had one hour sessions to play 4 a-side mini volleyball games, practiced some technical skills and were given tips on basic game tactics. Richmond Volleyball Coaches were impressed by the children’s abilities, attitude and commitment to learning a new sport.
Richmond's Junior Development Officer, commented the introduction of volleyball in Richmond primary schools is an important step in supporting Competitive Edge volleyball programme for Richmond's Secondary Schools which proved very successful.
