Richmond Men's 1st team walled local rivals
1st February 2007
Richmond Men’s 1st team travelled away yesterday evening and were in fantastic blocking form winning over their local rivals KS Odra in the London Volleyball League Men’s Division 1 match.
Richmond has been steadily rebuilding and developing their players from a core group of Kingston University and St Mary’s University students who have only been together for a few months and won 3-0.
The matched started with Tomas Stepien showing his formidable blocking strength
stopping his opposite number (6’6). Walid Odah also demonstrated that it was not only Stepien winning the points on block and joined the blocking party. Odra had very little in terms of hitting power and no player to make a game-changing impact. Richmond won the first set 25-22.
The 2nd set, started well again for Richmond with both Evan Penglis and Hamed Malti winning points from their jump serve float giving Richmond a huge advantage. The steady passing by
Zolie Lengyel, Hamed Malti and Tom Paulo gave Richmond setters Evan Penglis and Hamed Malti the opportunity to delivery excellent angles for Zolie Lengyel and Tom Paulo to execute the ball. Richmond won the 2nd set 25-22.
The blocking momentum by Stepien and Odah proved difficult for Odra and Richmond won the 3rd set comfortably 25-14. The players have trained and competed intensely in the last few months and their reward was paid off with this win. This will give much confidence commented Richmond Men’s 1st team coach, however they now need to show consistency in their results which will be their challenge for the remaining of the season.
Richmond Men's 1st Team: Zoltan Lengyel, Evan Penglis (Captain), Hamed Malti, Tomas Stepien, Walid Odah, Tom Paulo, David Rijvers (Coach).
Set Results: KS Odra [0] v Richmond [3] = 22-25; 22-25; 14-25
