18th December 2006
Richmond College are the South East Regional Volleyball Champions coming top in their South East Regional Volleyball Championships pool held at Richmond College. They will now travel to Loughborough University in March 2007 for the British College Sports National Volleyball Finals.
Richmond’s were very focused in their first match against Peter Symonds College from Winchester taking the first set comfortably 21-8. In the second set the team maintained their concentration and started to build to their confidence in the tournament and won the 2nd set to 21-6.
In their second match they faced Taunton’s College from Southampton who traditionally have always been very strong and this match proved no different. During the whole match the teams were neck-to-neck at the start of sets and in the first Taunton managed to win the first set 21-19. Richmond were disappoint as they put a lot of energy but were not fazed by this. In the 2nd set they went all guns blazing and recorded a great set win and because of this winning the match on better points difference. (21-15). Carol Gordon (Head Coach for Richmond and also manages the England Cadet Boys Squad – said this was the best match in the region for over 10 years. The standard of play was absolutely fantastic and credit has to go Taunton as the opposition played their play in making this a game to remember.
In the third match Richmond was on high and Carol rested several key players for this game and they team did not let themselves down winning both sets 21-11 and 21-10 against Queen Mary College from Basingstoke. Unfortunately Richmond was not able to compete against Chichester College as they had to withdraw from the competitive at the last minutes due to unforeseen circumstances.
It was a great run out for the U18 Men’s Richmond Academy Volleyball team and they are now look forward to the finals. The U18 Women Richmond team helped out with competent scoring duties and they look forward to playing their Regional pool in January 2007 and hope to be with the u18 Men at the finals in Loughborough for the end of March.
