St Mary's Men Best in Local Derby
9th November 2006
This fixture could have been potentially very interesting as both teams are coached by Whitton Coaches. However, Kingston University suffered a home defeat at the hands of St Mary’s University in a British Universities Volleyball South East Division 3A fixture.
In the first set, St Mary’s team got off to a slow start by not passing with their usual authority and Kingston took a (12 – 6) lead with their in consistent serving. A stuff block by Rob Snart, coupled with aggressive hitting from Yordan Delgado inspired St Mary’s fight back to 14-14. St Mary’s were them able to cling on and win the first set.
St Mary's momentum continued with strong serving by Toby Pitblado in the 2nd set, coupled with below par passing from their oppents reducing the available setting options enabling St Mary’s to take a comfortable 16-10 lead. One on one blocking by Kingston enable Kingston to side out and stay in the set, but St Mary’s closed the 2nd set with some clever hitting by Adam Jasnikowski (ex England Junior).
The third set was again a repeat of the previous two with St Mary’s taking an
early lead and staying in control.
St Mary's Coach Lyes Sola was pleased with the result and quality of play. The players developed a steady rhythm and performed well. This was an important match for us taking the team top of the BUSA SEM3A League table. Kingston's Coach Vera Kenyon was encouraged by team's performance. We will be stronger and much more organsied when we meet each other again in the New Year.
