Whitton Woman Prove a Point!
19th February 2006
Whitton VC a Premier London Women Volleyball Club add petrol to the fire as the West London club took their South London friends by surprise and secured a well deserved victory in the London Challenge against Dulwich Tuskers a National League Division 1 team.
The surprise came mainly from the height and jumping ability of Whittons’ attack players especially of the dynamic play of Lenka Ploscicova. Oddly, the crisis arrived for Tuskers in a spell of accurate serving by Whitton setter, Vera Keynon which took the score from nine all in the first set to 9:12. Tuskers’ time out seemed to give the underdogs even more confidence and Whitton breezed through the rest of the set 25-20.
By the start of the second set Tuskers had realised the size of the task they faced and the knowledgeable crowd was delighted by the quality of play and the battle for supremacy. Whitton opened a small lead after a period of even play but a Tuskers time out at 9:5 got the blockers concentrating fully on their job and they quickly narrowed the gap although the sides were not level until nineteen all. Nerve-racking stuff! It got to 22:22 and Tuskers figuratively threw it away: Tuskers substituted their front-line setter to give them the tallest possible block but nobody jumped, seemingly mesmerised as Martina Zajichkova hit through the middle then, unspectacularly, ceded the set through a net touch.
The match won, Whitton relaxed, in the “points per set won” format of this competition, the crowd spurred the local team on to have the tense atmosphere punctured in an unfortunate manner: The score-board moved to 5-5 and after Tuskers produced a magnificent ace they continued to dominate the game and finish in style. It was a disappointing end to a most enjoyable match that Whitton feel privileged to have seen for the result.
