Whitton Men Tame Lions in 5 set epic
12th February 2006
In a London League Premier Men’s Division fixture Whitton Volleyball travelled away to Bethnal Green and enjoyed a closely fought victory against London Lionhearts. There was little between the teams, but Whitton just managed to tame the Lions in their own den and claw out a victory in an exciting five set match.
Fortunes swung one way and then the other during the match with Lionhearts taking the first set 25:22. The second set was level to 6-6 when Whitton eased ahead to 12-6. Although Whitton were pegged back, they surged in the 2nd set to level the match with excellent hitting by the captain Evan Penglis and Zoltan Lengyel.
The Whitton team took the initiative in the third set and won a very convincing set 25:18 with great kill blocks by Dan Kielson 6’7 and Adam Davies 6’5. In the 4th Whitton had the opportunity to close the game but went off the boil in the early stages trailing 10-5 and found it difficult to catch up but they fought hard to get good positive momentum for the deciding set.
Again Whitton took an early lead in the 5th set 7-3 and then the teams’ side-out consecutively creating nail biting stuff as the sides matched each other shot for shot. Dan Kielson started to connect with David Rijvers quick sets giving Whitton the initiative and control the set at 12-9. Then at match point (13-14) Whitton sealed the victory by an opposition mistake when Lionhearts served into the net. Whitton’s coach commented a the team put a lot into this game and showed good character at difficult times.
