Malory Stomp Whitton Fire!
2nd February 2006
Two local teams met for the first time in a competitive match in the London Challenge Trophy held at Brunel University, Osterley Campus. This competition is were the best National League teams in Division 1 from London challenge one for the top three London Premier League teams. The two top teams from there respective groups will qualify for the semi finals and finals to be held on Sunday 9th April at Crystal Palace (the home for UK sport).
This was never in the frame for Match of the Day. Prosport National League Division 1 London Malory against London Premier Division 1 Whitton VC: the result was, surely a foregone conclusion. It was, nevertheless, one of those curiosities that only the challenge format can produce and proved interesting from a tactical and psychological point of view.
“Whitton qualified for the London Challenge by finishing third from 2004/05 London Premier Volleyball season and they welcomed this competition because it enabled Whitton to test how good they were,” commented Vera Kenyon (Whitton’s Ladies coach).
Malory was only at its best in the second set and that set score probably reflected the true difference in class between the sides: one rather hiding their talent and the other showing talent that was raw in nature. Whitton struggled without their star attacker Katarina Mihulcova and Kelly Jones.
Inevitably, Whitton will have learned more from this encounter than Malory but that is the nature of the challenge in any sport. And neither side had to travel very far.
