Mary's
23rd January 2006
Whitton Volleyball Club and St Mary’s College (Twickenham: London) A College of the University of Surrey have engaged in a sporting partnership to create a volleyball centre of excellence.
This partnership is to promote volleyball in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames and neighbouring areas by bringing athletes, coaches, and the local community together to foster a distinctive culture of excellence by integrating sport, competition, training and education.
St Mary’s College is a very established sports college for Rugby, Hockey and
Athletics and now plays a major part in the day-to-day life of our vibrant community and is seen as developing minor sports a major priority for future development.
The College volleyball men and women teams hope to take full advantage from Whitton’s coaching resources to support their involvement in the Inter University competition organised by the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA).
The partnership between Whitton VC and St Mary’s College also seeks to to develop links with schools and the wider community.
The role of coordinating all of the above falls to the College’s Director of Sport and Physical Recreation, Andrew Reid-Smith and his dedicated team of staff, and David Rijvers and Vera Kenyon from Whitton
Volleyball Club.
Whitton's Club Chairman and Club Secretary commented that volleyball has come such a
long way and it has received enormous popularity on a global basis, and as an
Olympic sport for men and women volleyball is ranked number two, only behind
soccer, in participation sports worldwide.
